Beating Trays

An insect beating tray, also called a clap net or a Japanese umbrella, is a tool used by entomologists to sample insects from trees and shrubs. The entomologist holds the frame under a branch and strikes the foliage with a stick, causing the insects to fall onto the cloth for easy collection and observation.
