Berlese Funnels

A Berlese funnel, also known as a Tullgren funnel, was initially introduced by Italian entomologist Antonio Berlese in the late 19th century and later improved by Swedish entomologist Albert Tullgren.  It's a tool to extract organisms, particularly small soil-dwelling arthropods such as insects, mites, and springtails.  These species respond negatively to desiccation, from soil and litter samples.
